Vitamin D

Now that spring is upon us and we are getting outside more its time to think about vitamin D.

So why do you need vitamin D?  Just a couple of benefits from Vitamin D include it helps with depression, digestion, liver function, and mood.  It helps strengthen your bones, helps build muscle and helps decrease body fat.  Look at this little chart as well:

And these are just a few benefits from getting enough vitamin D.

So how do you get vitamin D?  You can get it from your daily food intake.  You can take a supplement.  The best way however is to get enough sun exposure.  You need to know the best way to absorb that sun and produce that vitamin D.  Something that you may not know is that children get the chance to make way more vitamin D than do adults.  This is because children have areas all over their bodies where they have "brown fat."  The brown fat is the best area to convert sunlight into vitamin D.  Adults only have two areas really that continue to have brown fat.  Can you gues where those two place are?  The upper back between the shoulder blades and base of the neck and the top of your feet, thats where.  What I'm saying is that you need to get these two areas of your body exposed to the sun to get more vitamin D and to improve your health.  Getting sun exposure to other parts of your body helps too but not near as much as these two areas.  One big problem with this is that during the sunniest part of the year we slather on tons of sunscreen which then blocks the affects of the sun on those areas and therefore decreasing the effects on the suns benefits.  So what I'm saying is to go out and get some sun just don't put the sunscreen on right away.  Give yourself about 30 minutes of sun exposure before you lather up.  Have fun this summer.
